The amount of virtual water contained by the the food imported into Israel is quantified. Using the globally parameterised SWAT, not only the water footprint can be modeled, but also the impact of agricultural production on other ecosystem services in exporting countries. About FAOSTAT trade data is quantified the Israeli import and export of food and associated with it the virtual flows of water and the water footprint. With the help of globally parameterised SWAT and InVEST it is determined how agricultural production affects the ecosystem services of the exporting countries for the most important export regions and the extent to which a shift in agricultural production and thus water use adversely affects ecosystem services in the countries of cultivation. This will establish the interaction of the study and transfer sites with global water resources and ecosystem services.
